Rally in the park

Take A Stand, an event joining the people of New Hampshire and congressional delegations against the war in Iraq, will be held Aug. 28 at Veterans Park in Manchester from 5 to 7 p.m. Rally participants will call for the withdrawal of all troops and private mercenaries and an end to the occupation. There will likely be a march from Sen. Sununu's office to Veterans Park prior to the rally.

Concord is full of winners. Seventy of them just happen to be dancers.

A group of 8- to 9-year-old girls on the Concord Dance Academy petite dance team took home first-place honors out of 1,074 routines at a national competition in Virginia Beach, Va. Let's be clear about this: These girls beat out several age divisions, including juniors, teens and seniors. For their effort, the girls took home "a trophy taller than anyone on the team," according to the press release announcing their win.

The St. Paul's Sentinel

Here’s the down low on the new school year at St. Paul’s, from Rector Bill Matthews:

Is there anything new or different, physically, at the school this fall?

Speaking of NH Trail's....

City auditorium gets an extreme theater makeover

The Friends of The Concord City Auditorium received four major grants in support of their 2007 capital improvements project: the purchase and installation of a code-compliant Zetex safety curtain to replace the theatre's historic asbestos fire curtain. Grants totaling $34,100. were awarded by The Cogswell Benevolent Trust, The Oleonda B. Jameson Trust, The Merrimack County Savings Bank Foundation, and The New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. Additional funds were raised by the Friends of the Audi, primarily by the group's Hospitality Committee.

N.H. trails + camera = photo exhibit

A new exhibit at the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests opens with a reception on Friday, Aug. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit features nature photography by Godfrey Sluder of Kingston. The collection includes photos from the Swett Mountain Forest easement in Gilford, the McCabe Forest in Antrim, the Freedom Town Forest, Dudley Pond in Deering and other New Hampshire properties.

Acting skills not required for this show

Ever since 1991, The Friends of the Audi - the groups and folks who use it - gather in August to put a new shine on the house. In 2006, 87 volunteers from 70 area families worked 436 hours, providing $6,570 worth of maintenance labor. This helped hold down the city's operating costs (and our taxes) and our rentals, keeping our theater affordable and accessible for everyone.

Sailfish swimmers bring home the glory

Congratulations to all the Concord YMCA Sailfish swimmers who swam last weekend at GSSA champs, Aug. 4 and 5, held at the Jenny Thompson Pool in Dover. Our 9-10 boys' 200 free relay and 200 medley relay placed first in our division. Both relays included Ben Tetreault, Noah Shortlidge, Logan Lamb and Alan Sietz.
Logan Lamb placed first in all three of his individual events: the 8-and-under 50 freestyle (36.11), 25 breastroke (24.77), and 25 backstroke (21.18).
